Bluffton, Ohio, is set to transport residents back in time as the Bluffton Ohio Historical Society prepares to host a reenactment of notorious gangster John Dillinger’s robbery of Citizens National Bank. The detailed performance is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, beginning promptly at 11:55 a.m., right in front of the bank, located at 102 S. Main St. in Bluffton. The event promises a vivid portrayal of the historical incident, designed to engage and inform the local community about a significant moment in the region's past.
The reenactment will bring to life the dramatic events of the robbery through a "detailed minute-by-minute action script" developed by historian Fred Steiner. According to the historical society, this script is based on eyewitness accounts of the original robbery, aiming for an accurate depiction of what transpired. The cast for the performance will include actors portraying Dillinger’s gang, who will be dressed in authentic three-piece suits to reflect the era. Furthermore, over a dozen volunteers from the community will participate, taking on the roles of eyewitnesses to the crime, enhancing the immersive experience for attendees. Local thespian Kevin Gratz is also slated to perform live during the event, adding another layer of engagement to the historical presentation.
The entire performance is planned to run for 30 minutes, capturing the intense moments of the robbery and its immediate aftermath. To further enhance the historical accuracy and sensory experience, the reenactment will feature a 1930s getaway car, mirroring the vehicle used during the original incident. As Dillinger's gang exits the bank, small fireworks will be deployed to simulate the gunfire, adding a realistic audio and visual element to the dramatic escape sequence.
Before the reenactment itself, the event will kick off with an exciting prelude. Joe Bayliff’s Route 30 Harley-Davidson dealership, from Upper Sandusky, is scheduled to make a grand entrance. Riders from the dealership will begin barreling into town on motorcycles starting at 10 a.m., building anticipation for the main event and setting the historical atmosphere.
In addition to the live performance, a significant artifact tied to John Dillinger will be on display for the public to view. The original jail cell that once held Dillinger will be showcased as part of the historical society's presentation. This unique piece of history is permanently on loan to the Bluffton Ohio Historical Society from Allen County, offering a tangible connection to the infamous gangster.
