DELPHOS — The 69th annual Delphos Canal Days recently wrapped up its run in downtown, providing a gathering point for the community from Thursday, Sept. 17, to Sunday, Sept. 20. The event, a long-standing tradition for the city, aimed to connect old friendships, offer diverse activities for families, and contribute to the revitalization of Delphos.
Organizers emphasized the importance of hosting a festival unique to Delphos, highlighting its role in uniting people, celebrating local identity, and creating an Americana-like experience for all ages. Eric Fritz noted that Canal Days is a significant local event, stating, "It's getting everybody out in the area, getting people back home that's been away. A lot of people come home for the weekend and rekindle, you know, friendships and families. It's just a big deal here."
Beyond entertainment, a core mission of Canal Days is to give back to the community through its proceeds. Fritz affirmed this, citing, "We give back to the community. Like, down in the parks, there's a big splash pad. We paid for a big chunk of that with the money we raised here." This commitment means that local participation directly supports tangible improvements within the city.
The festival offered a range of attractions and programs throughout the weekend. Attendees enjoyed traditional fair elements such as rides and various food vendors. Tony Wary, an organizer for the event, mentioned that different programs were held to engage the community. He noted, "There's pet parades and we have a kiddy tractor pull, dueling pianos and other events." Wary also observed the strong turnout, stating, "Everything downtown last night was just full."
Despite some events being affected by rain, a particularly popular attraction, bingo, continued to draw crowds and maintain its strong appeal. Marysa Bowersock, a member of the Toast Committee, confirmed that "Bingo is a big hit. It's actually one of the top money raisers of the whole weekend." This sustained popularity underscores the community's engagement with the festival's offerings.
Bowersock also shed light on the extensive effort required to organize Delphos Canal Days, noting that its success is not achieved overnight. She explained the continuous planning involved, stating, "We work on it all year round. We start pretty soon after it’s over and work on things throughout the whole year." This year-round dedication ensures the festival's smooth execution and continued improvement.
Throughout the weekend, many families actively participated in the scheduled events, enjoyed the food, and simply took in the atmosphere of downtown Delphos. Their involvement collectively contributed to the festival's fundraising efforts for the town. Bowersock expressed her appreciation for this community spirit, sharing her sentiment that she loves "seeing all the people coming together and working on raising money for the town."
Even with some rain impacting activities, the 69th annual Delphos Canal Days delivered on its promise, offering locals a fun weekend getaway at the onset of fall and strengthening community bonds while supporting local restoration initiatives.
