Ohio House member Allison Russo, a Democrat who currently serves in the state legislature and previously led her party as House Minority Leader, has won the election to become Ohio’s next secretary of state following a formal concession from Republican candidate Robert Sprague, as Ohio Capital Journal reported. Sprague, who serves as the current Ohio treasurer and also previously held a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives, conceded the statewide election on Tuesday night after acknowledging the overwhelming political environment facing candidates across the state.
Speaking to a crowd gathered at the Ohio Democratic Party’s election night celebration on Tuesday evening, Russo expressed deep honor and humility regarding the election outcome. She informed attendees that Ohio voters chose a leadership vision rooted firmly in principles of fairness, administrative accessibility, and institutional transparency. Russo emphasized during her speech that the office of the secretary of state directly touches the core of daily life for citizens across Ohio. She further stated that the electorate delivered an exceptionally clear message demanding election systems that are secure, efficient, accessible, and transparent for every eligible voter in the state, regardless of where those voters live or how they choose to cast their ballots.
The election outcome followed a notable shift in non-partisan campaign analyses in the final days leading up to Election Day. Just days before voters went to the polls, election forecaster Sabato’s Crystal Ball—an initiative based at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics—revised its assessment of the statewide contest. The forecaster determined that the secretary of state race was no longer leaning toward a Republican victory, officially shifting its rating of the campaign to a toss-up.
During his concession speech on Tuesday night, Sprague reflected on the overall political climate and the broad challenges faced by candidates on the ballot. He stated that Republican public officials knew prior to Election Day that they would encounter significant political headwinds, though those challenges ultimately proved stronger than anyone had anticipated. Describing the election dynamics as a national wave, Sprague noted that a number of dedicated Republican public servants who deeply love Ohio were swept away in the night's voting results. He offered his congratulations to Russo on her victory and remarked that the Republican Party now has a period of internal soul searching ahead as it evaluates the path forward.
Russo’s victory marks a major shift in the political leadership of the Ohio Secretary of State office, which has been continuously occupied by Republican officials for more than a decade. The executive seat has remained under GOP control since 2011, when Republican Jon Husted officially assumed the office after succeeding Democrat Jennifer Brunner, a former secretary of state who currently serves as a justice on the Ohio Supreme Court. Husted led the state elections office until 2019, at which point current Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose took over the position.
Before Brunner held the executive post, the secretary of state office was occupied by Republican officeholders Ken Blackwell and former governor Bob Taft. Taft originally took over the seat from Democrat Sherrod Brown, who subsequently moved to federal office as a United States senator. According to Tuesday’s unofficial election results, Brown successfully won back a United States Senate seat from Husted, the former secretary of state who had previously held the statewide elections post. Both Russo and Sprague brought legislative experience to the secretary of state race from their respective tenures serving in the Ohio House of Representatives, where Russo served as minority leader before mounting her statewide campaign.
