Lincolnview High School junior Ila Hughes, a standout softball pitcher, has recently committed to play college softball at Virginia Tech. The right-handed pitcher, a two-time All-Northwest Conference and two-time first-team All-Ohio selection, will join the Hokies following her graduation from Lincolnview in 2028.
Hughes, who began attending camps at Virginia Tech when she was 14 years old, indicated that the decision felt like a natural progression. Virginia Tech coaches first showed interest after seeing her play in a travel ball game and subsequently invited her to a camp. "It's actually been a long time coming," Hughes said about her commitment. From that initial camp experience, she described it as "a 'when you know, you know' type of feeling," suggesting a strong connection to the program from early on.
Over the past several years, Hughes considered various softball programs, including schools from the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, and several mid-majors. However, she noted that none felt quite as right as Virginia Tech. Her decision was heavily influenced by the coaching staff, which she believes offers a significant opportunity for development and relationship-building. Hughes also found the campus environment appealing, stating that Blacksburg, Virginia, is "such a beautiful place," and she could envision herself living there. She affirmed that she "never questioned anything about the program."
Making an early decision has brought a sense of relief for Hughes, who will still play two more years for Lincolnview. She reflected on her previous high school years, saying, "my focus was that I had to get recruited." Now, she feels she can relax, knowing her future plans. This certainty will serve as motivation to improve during her remaining time at Lincolnview.
Last spring, Hughes played a crucial role in leading Coach Eric Schwab’s Lincolnview squad to the Division VI state semifinals. The team finished the 2026 season with an impressive 21-7 overall record, capturing the Northwest Conference title with a perfect 7-0 NWC record. While Lincolnview ultimately lost to West Jefferson 8-0 in the state semifinal game at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Hughes had a memorable regional final performance. She holds Lincolnview’s single-season strikeout record and fanned a career-high 16 batters against Margaretta in that Division VI regional final contest.
Hughes determined she wanted to play college softball around age 12, when she first started playing travel ball. She later discussed with her parents the prospect of joining a higher-level team to take her training more seriously. Her travel ball schedule is intensive, with five or six tournaments during the summer after the high school season, followed by more tournaments starting in mid-October after a brief break in August and September. These trips often provide family experiences outside of the sport, she noted.
While Hughes is capable of playing other positions, her primary focus at Virginia Tech will be pitching. "I’m going as a pitcher. That’s pretty much where I’m settled in at," she stated, adding that it is "what I love to do." Academically, Hughes is planning to pursue a major in a fitness or wellness-related field, with an interest in nutrition or exercise science.
