Lima Central Catholic secured a 26-21 victory over Bluffton on Friday night at Harmon Field, deciding a matchup of previously undefeated Northwest Conference teams with a late defensive stand. The Thunderbirds (7-0, 4-0 NWC), ranked No. 2 in last week’s Division VI Associated Press poll, overcame an early 14-point deficit before securing the win.
The game's outcome was decided by a critical defensive play in the final seconds. With 25 seconds remaining, LCC’s Jayden Williams sacked Bluffton quarterback Tayte Giesige on a fourth-and-goal play from the 27-yard line, cementing the Thunderbirds' victory. LCC defensive coordinator Ryan Betts spoke to reporters following the game, highlighting the team’s resilience and their motto to "find a way." Betts, who LCC head coach Colin Stolly asked to address reporters in recognition of the 16-year veteran assistant’s contributions, noted the defensive strategy on the final play involved bringing a backer from the inside to keep the quarterback in the pocket and applying pressure. He added that the defense had held Bluffton 26 points below its season scoring average.
Bluffton (6-1, 3-1 NWC), ranked No. 4 in last week’s Division V Associated Press poll, initially took control, establishing a two-touchdown lead. Quarterback Tayte Giesige connected with Blayne Hill on a 47-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 3-yard touchdown reception by Keatyn Shafer. Giesige finished the game completing 14 of 20 passes for 219 yards and one interception, and also led his team in rushing with 13 carries for 99 yards. Hill recorded six catches for 107 yards, and Lleyton Miller added three catches for 85 yards. Bluffton coach Jeff Richards commented that LCC was "sending more than we could protect" on the final play.
LCC faced early challenges, including two first-half turnovers. Quarterback Brady Parker fumbled at the goal line, and the team also suffered an interception. Despite this, Parker and the Thunderbirds responded, initiating their scoring run just 20 seconds before halftime. Parker found Jaxon White for a 25-yard touchdown pass, marking the first of 26 unanswered points for LCC. Parker concluded the game with 118 passing yards, including two touchdowns and one interception, and rushed for 119 yards with an additional touchdown. Parker reflected on the team's ability to overcome challenges during the game, noting it was the most they had faced all season.
The Thunderbirds continued their scoring drive in the second half. Michael Quatman caught a 41-yard touchdown pass, and Carter Lester scored on a 15-yard run. Parker then capped a 13-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, giving LCC a 12-point advantage with 9:52 remaining. Lester finished the contest with 13 carries for 82 yards.
Bluffton, however, mounted a comeback attempt. Four minutes after Parker’s score, Giesige connected with running back Parker Lovell on a 15-yard pass for a touchdown, narrowing LCC’s lead to five points. Bluffton coach Jeff Richards described the duel between Giesige and Parker as similar to watching top NFL quarterbacks, where dynamic players could achieve impressive feats.
This victory positions LCC favorably in the NWC title race. Their remaining opponents have a combined record of 5-16, with LCC's next game scheduled at home against Delphos Jefferson next Friday. Parker expressed high emotions about the win, stating it was the NWC game they needed to win to pursue the conference title, and felt amazing for the team's season-long work.
Bluffton, now in a three-way tie for second place in the NWC, will travel to Crestview next week, followed by games at Fort Loramie and at home against Columbus Grove. Coach Richards affirmed that his team would recover, acknowledging they played a great team but had much football left to play.
