Delphos Jefferson’s girls’ soccer team secured a narrow 1-0 victory over visiting Allen East in a Northwest Conference matchup on Tuesday at Stadium Park’s Champions Field. Senior Nephtalie Miller scored the game's only goal with 3:40 remaining in the first half. The win improves Delphos Jefferson’s record to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the NWC, while Allen East falls to 0-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
Miller, a standout sprinter in track, was responsible for both of Delphos Jefferson’s shots on goal during the match, converting one into the decisive score. Her goal came from just outside the 18-yard box. Miller was an integral part of last year’s 400-meter relay team that placed fifth at the Division V state track-and-field meet, and her speed is a key asset on the field.
Delphos Jefferson coach Megan Etzkorn stated the team, with only three seniors on the roster, will focus on strong defensive play as its offense develops. Etzkorn noted the team is still working to determine its optimal formation while ensuring its defense remains solid. The coach emphasized that the team had "a lot of big shoes to fill this year" and described the Wildcats as a transition team.
Miller acknowledged her increased role this season, citing the loss of several key players from last year’s squad. She mentioned former senior teammate Kyah Kimmett, also part of the 400-meter relay, as being the fastest on the team last year. Miller indicated it was now "my turn to step up," and she strives to be a leader, constantly running across the field to pursue the ball.
Allen East mounted five shots on goal during the game, with four coming in the first half and one clean shot in the second half. Maci Freewalt took two shots for the Mustangs, while Madelyn Freewalt, A’lani Rettig, and Jurzi Freels each recorded one shot. Delphos Jefferson goalkeeper Sydnee Bayman made four saves, while Allen East goalkeeper Liberty Hawk recorded one save. Allen East also took three corner kicks compared to Delphos Jefferson’s one.
Coach Etzkorn highlighted the team's speed, noting that three of the four girls from the state-qualifying 400-meter relay team are on the soccer roster, including Paige Schwinnen and alternate Mia Munoz. The coach explained that with this speed, they are working to determine the best way to advance the ball for their players.
Reflecting on the season, Etzkorn mentioned the team faced strong opponents recently, specifically an undefeated Ada team and a consistently tough Continental squad. She anticipates a challenging upcoming period with all away games next week but expressed hope that by tournament time, the team will be working together effectively. Miller agreed, stating that the team is improving and needs to play as a cohesive unit.
