According to the FDA, a total of 17 individuals were infected with E. coli between May and August 2026, with six of those requiring hospitalization. E. coli infection can lead to severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. In some cases, particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems, it can result in a serious condition known as hemolytic uremic syndrome.
